Viareggio and the coast

45 mins drive from Bagni di Lucca, Viareggio which means " Way of the kings" is on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the main centre of the Northern Tuscan Riviera known as Versilia which includes Torre del Lago, Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore, Marina di Pietrasanta, Forte EDel Marmi.

Viareggio is the second largest city in Lucca Province. It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous Carnival of Viareggio (dating back to 1873) and its papier mache floats which parade along the promenade known as the Passeggiata a mare in the weeks before Easter.

It has 10km of sandy beaches 4km of which are public beaches. Viareggio also has a canal system running into the centre one being Barlamacca lined with restaurants where you can watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch and set up store to sell the fish to the public.
